Gradable Epistemic Modals, Probability, and Scale Structure
نویسنده
چکیده
The epistemic modals possible, probable, likely, and certain require a semantics which treats them both as modal operators and as gradable adjectives. An analysis of these items in terms of Kennedy & McNally (2005)’s theory gradability suggests that they are associated with a single, fully closed scale of possibility. An implementation using the standard (Kratzerian) theory of modality is shown to make incorrect predictions in several domains. However, if the scale of possibility is identified with standard probability, the facts about gradability are explained and the undesirable predictions of Kratzer’s theory are avoided.

Wondering What Might Be
This paper explores the possibility of supplementing the suppositional view of indicative conditionals with a corresponding view of epistemic modals. The most striking feature of the suppositional view consists in its claim that indicative conditionals are to be evaluated by conditional probabilities. On the basis of a natural link between indicative conditionals and epistemic modals, a corresp...

Epistemic and deontic comparatives differ in how they interact with disjunction. I argue that this difference provides a compelling empirical argument against the semantics of Kratzer (1991), which predicts that all modal comparatives should interact with disjunction in the same way. Interestingly, an identical distinction is found in the semantics of non-modal adjectives: additive adjectives l...
متن کاملExpressivism Concerning Epistemic Modals
In this paper, a new argument for an expressivist account of epistemic modals is developed. The argument starts from a puzzle about epistemic modals that Seth Yalcin recently presented. Yalcin’s own solution to the puzzle is rejected and a better explanation is given which is based on expressivism concerning epistemic modals. Furthermore, two alleged problems for expressivism are addressed: fir...
متن کاملProbability Operators
This is a study in the meaning of natural language probability operators, sentential operators such as probably and likely. We ask what sort of formal structure is required to model the logic and semantics of these operators. Along the way we investigate their deep connections to indicative conditionals and epistemic modals, probe their scalar structure, observe their sensitivity to contextuall...
متن کامل9 Epistemic
I have a puzzle about epistemic modals.1 I spell it out in the next two sections ( 2-3). The puzzle teaches, I eventually say, that ‘possibly’, ‘probably’, and the rest of the epistemic modals do not designate functions which yield, as output, propositions. As a result, the puzzle tells against standard truth-conditional approaches to the semantics of epistemic modals ( 4), and also against mor...
